  Unidentified Suspect by Issac Cordal

A collaboration between Submit2gravity and Eva Studios (formerly known as  Exeter Artspace) created the opportunity for 36 selected artists from London and the South West, to exhibit in two unique venues.  Transition, launched in the ancient Norman surroundings of Exeter Castle and then toured to the four storey building of the Bargehouse on London’s South Bank. Multi media artwork was showcased in the prison cells of Exeter Castle and within the labyrinth of intertwining rooms of the Bargehouse.

Exeter Castle and the Bargehouse provided the unique backdrops to house artwork crossing traditional with new media.  Live and participatory performances, digital media, ceramics, painting, photography, drawing, digital technology occupying the many rooms.

  Mother by Genetic Moo

When entering the rustic ambience of the Bargehouse and within the grand arena of Exeter Castle you encountered intriguing sounds along with visual and interactive installations.

The darken attic space of the Bargehouse lends itself to the triplet of rotating mesh figures 'Unidentified Suspects' by artist Isaac Cordial.  UV lights directed on the mesh figures cast beautifully delicate ghostly shadows within the arched recesses of the wall.

Genetic Moos' installation 'Mother', named after the Greek God Echidna 'Mother of all monsters', pulsated and revealed deeper levels of organic activity.  Mother was aware of your presence and responded to your sound.  Her inner organs evoked celestial worlds and microscopic sea creatures.

  Machine by George Lazenbleep

The cell space at Exeter Castle was the ideal location for artist George Lazenbleeps' interactive sound installation Machine.  He utilised resonating interference from the surrounding environment, along with electronic sound generators, springs and found objects for the viewer play and create unique sounds and ultimately become part of the machine.

Volhardt Mueller's 'Cell 5' installation was created life size prints made from one of the prisons cells at Exeter Castle.  Each panel from the cell was left untouched where the history of previous occupants were revealed in the etchings made in the cell itself.  The panels were then dismantled and printed with water based paint on fine opaque paper and reconstructed within the rustic ambience of the Bargehouse. (Image of 'Cell 5' is shown on the home page).

Both curators carefully selected artwork that emphasized the way in which art can be engaging, playful and dynamic.
