Submit2gravity presents ‘You are not in control’ in the gallery located on the ground floor of Netil House.  The premise is based on the organic, aesthetic reference of the real and manufactured – realities transformed by images and media. The exhibition aims to challenge our perception of our subconscious mind – memory and thought processes.  Our stored intake of visuals along with our consumption of mass media information is a reminder that sometimes we are not in control of our own thought patterns.

‘You are not in control’ exhibits traditional art forms, which sit alongside modern innovative installations in an extraordinary exhibition. Showcasing the talents of emerging and established artists from the UK and overseas.

Playing on the idea of the early motion picture device ‘Mutoscope – What the Biologist saw’ is a modified gramophone box which houses a netbook running an interactive animation starring two of Genetic Moos creatures - the Starfish and the Urchin.  A handle located at the side of the box is attached to the mouse control allowing the winder to determine the speed of the action as the starfish and urchin spiral into a passionate embrace.

Meticulously made by using rubber and fibreglass casting, moulding and painting techniques, Garry Martin sculpture’s play on our initial visual perception by re-creating objects with materials that contradict the use and purpose of the object itself.

Distorting the boundaries between our relationship with the real world and the illusionary ‘Circus Circus’ by Michael Tierney attempts, to blur the boundaries by juxtaposing 2-dimensional images with 3-dimensional space and found objects.

Drawing is the central medium around Marianne Walkers work.  She continually challenges the physical presence of drawing with her 3 dimensional sculpture ‘Density’ which is a pure reference to this.  She is committed in pushing the boundaries in how we recognise drawing and the way in which it is seen within the environment of a gallery.

Timothy Laydens' paintings are developed from a series of worked called ‘The Shape of Sounds’.  He captures and record’s sounds or the use of objects and instruments, which gives him a strong sense or reaction.  Timothy edits and translates these sounds through trajectory and morphing outlines of shapes and colours to ensure that the notion of the invisible world of sound can be seen.

'Piece of Memory' by Hong Jung Ouk represents different feelings taken from our environment, our age and the impact that media has on our daily lives.  A ‘Piece of memory’ is a sculpture constructed of many angular shapes and housed within are many mirrors creating a kaleidoscope in which to view the world. The blending between the virtual and the real represents the varied experiences of our lives where the mirrors expand and distort our sense of reality.

Jockel Liess interactive and generative installation ‘Iridescent’, responds to the exhibition environment through the analysis of a web camera image.  The installation is responsive to the environment and the movement of potential spectators, which will constantly change the arrangement of acoustics and visuals.

‘Away from the light’ by artists Shona Davies, Dave Monaghan & John Klein, is an installation depicting a miniature crematorium which contains a loan mourner, two open coffins and a miniature screen playing out events leading up to their deaths.  The viewer is positioned as an illicit voyeur observing this enclosed world which explores what we choose to share and the internal world of the mundane, our fantasies, despair and all is conveyed using dark humour.

'Deepest Sympathy' is the new digital animation by David Theobald. This new works sees Theobold exploring how our lives are celebrated and remembered through greetings cards only to find we are left with a sense of mourning and sadness that we are exploited by consumerism; a thought provoking animation. As always Theobolds work is multi layered and challenges with our own cultural understanding and in this piece, consumer consciousness.

Using raw materials from nature merged with digital technology Christian Kerrigan creates 'Threshold'.  An installation made from plant ecologies living off the architecture of the gallery.  Digitally programmed rainfall irrigates the installation.

Playful and engaging on so many levels ‘You are not in control’ encompasses art and innovation integrated under one umbrella.
